Golf is one of the most popular activities to enjoy in Cartagena, and indeed in Spain. The sunny Costa del Sol has been recognised as the golfers coast for decades, but the Costa Calida and Costa Blanca offer their fair share of excellent golf courses. With so many surrounding Roman ruins and old military fortresses and cannon batteries, there's not much room left to to build a golf course within Cartagena's immediate surroundings. However, a short drive will take you to several great courses, as well as the splendid La Manga Club that boasts a whopping 4 courses.

La Manga Club

Less than 30 minutes drive from Cartagena, the superb La Manga Club has been recognised as the largest sports and leisure facility in Europe. The sports, leisure and entertainment facilities here are mind boggling, and to fully appreciate them we have written a separate article titled La Manga Club. Keen golfers who wish to spend as much time on the courses as possible can choose to stay at the club's great selection of accommodation. If visiting with family, there are many other daily activities to enjoy at the resort while the golfer in the family plays a round or two.

La Manga Club Golf Courses

Of the four 18 hole courses at the resort, one of them is an excellent 18 hole Pitch & Putt course. This was designed by the much loved and respected pro golfer Severiano Ballesteros. It is great for sharpening your short game with wonderful greens, water obstacles and particularly well designed par 3's. The North Course has a length of 5,755 metres and par 71. Lakes and storm gullies (barrancos) are key features here. The South Course has been the venue for several nail biting Spanish Opens and PGA Championships. It has a par 73 and length of 6,499 metres. Then you've the West Course with a par 72, length of 5,714 metres and frequent changes in elevation.

Aside from the challenging pitch & putt course, players can practice on the recently refurbished driving range. The club also boasts a training centre and golf academy. This is overseen by the renowned Swedish instructor Thomas Johansson. He combines three of Europe's most important styles of golf, Swedish, Spanish and British in order to teach his students the best aspects of each. Training and classes can be undertaken as an individual or as part of a group.

Further Surrounding Golf Courses

La Manga Club is not far from the spectacular Mar Menor Lagoon. Often referred to as an inland sea, the villages and resorts lining the lagoon are very popular with holidaymakers. La Serena is the closest course to the lagoon shores and known for its many water hazards. Slightly inland from here are a further three courses which include the Saurines de la Torre Golf Resort. Around 40 minutes drive from Cartagena, in neighbouring Costa Blanca is the popular resort area of Orihuela Costa. This is home to four 18 hole courses, all within 10 minutes drive from each other.
